This course is an introduction to linguistic anthropology, the study of language in comparative social context. What is “language,” and why does it matter? To answer this question, we will read classic and contemporary approaches to language as social action. In addition to providing an introduction to some of the key thematic trends in the analysis of language and culture, this course also offers an overview of the emergence of linguistic anthropology as a discipline.
