ASL Activites

The American Sign Language program at Princeton strives to be a community where students, faculty, staff, and members of the Deaf community learn and appreciate together what ASL and Deaf culture have to offer our society.

The program partners with the student-run ASL club, the Princeton Center for Language Study, the Program in Community Engagement (ProCES), and other programs to host ASL tables in Residential College dining halls, ASL social events, field trips, volunteer opportunities at Deaf schools, public lectures on ASL and Deaf culture, ASL immersion retreats, and much more.

Moreover, many of the ASL courses have a community-based learning initiative sponsored by the ProCES where students are required to engage in the local Deaf community. For example, in the introductory ASL courses, students are able to get reimbursed for attending a local Deaf community event. One of the most popular events is of course ASL Slam in NYC. Since Princeton is equidistant between Philadelphia and NYC, and near to Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf in Trenton, students indeed have many opportunities to be immersed in diverse Deaf communities.

In addition, we have a Canvas site called ASL Resource Site where we post announcements about on-campus ASL events and recommended ASL and Deaf culture resources. This is open to anyone in the Princeton University community. If you would like to have access to this site, please email Prof. Buchholz

If you have questions or would like to be involved with the ASL program, please email Prof. Noah Buchholz.
