Accompanied by Professors Laura Kalin and Byron Ahn, Linguistics students took a field trip to see the movie “Arrival”. “Arrival” stars Amy Adams as a Linguistics professor who leads a team in finding a way to communicate with alien visitors to earth. Over dinner after the movie, students discussed logographic writing systems, the Sapir Whorf hypothesis, and the plausibility of a noun like “purpose” being understood by beings that experience time non-linearly.
