North American Computation Linguistic Olympiad at Princeton

March 4, 2017

Princeton is among many U.S. and Canadian universities to host and promote the North American Computational Linguistic Olympiad (NACLO), where High School and Middle School students compete annually in solving linguistic puzzles through pattern recognition and logical reasoning. Princeton site hosts include webmaster Samvida Sudheesh Venkatesh (MOL ’19), Thomas Clark (COS ’18), Bill Huang (MAT ’19), Khanh Vu (COS ’20), Yael Lilienthal (LIN ’19), and Christiane Fellbaum.  Samvida and Bill are past participants in the International Linguistics Olympiad.

Following a practice session, the Open Round was held on January 25. Of the 17 participating students, six qualified for the second round on March 8 – nationwide only 10% of the top-scoring students reach this level.  Finally, Pranav Krishna was one of the eight students who will represent the U.S. in the International Linguistics Olympiad in Prague in July.  Congratulations!

Princeton area students have been represented in disproportionately high numbers on both the Invitational and International levels in the past, and many have chosen Princeton for their university studies.
