The second meeting of the Princeton Phonology Forum (PPɸF 20202021) will be held March 19, 20, and 21, 2021.
The theme for PɸF 2021 is “tone and phonological theory”. It has been nearly a decade since Hyman (2011) proposed the question “Tone: is it different?”, illustrating the many ways that tone is both quantitatively and qualitatively distinct from other phonological phenomena. This workshop seeks to further understand how and why tone is different, and what this means for phonological theory. Phonologically, how should tone be represented and computed? Morphologically, what kinds of tonal exponence are there? How can tone be used to express syntactic relations? How does tone interact with other prosody (stress, feet, intonation, boundary tones), and how is it implemented phonetically? How can tone inform current theory, such as computational phonology, Message-Oriented Phonology, probabilistic/variationist phonology, interface-ist phonology, as well as variants of modern Optimality Theory? These are but a sample of potential questions.
